About

The Northern Virginia Senior Olympics (NVSO) was organized in 1982 for the purpose of providing senior adults an opportunity for competition and fellowship through various athletic, and recreational events. Working together with the local Northern Virginia parks and recreation departments and other agencies, the Olympics have been a continuing success. Until 1988, the minimum age for participation was 55. The age was changed to 50 to coincide with the Virginia Senior Games and the National Senior Games. In order for an athlete to participate in the NVSO, he or she must be a resident of one of the sponsoring jurisdictions. Agencies that are a part of NVSO are asked to provide staff, volunteers and facilities to help in organizing the overall event. Many of the athletes who compete in the NVSO participate in the Virginia Senior Games and qualify for the National Senior Games. Northern Virginia has had a large number of athletes representing NVSO at these competitions. NVSO has had the financial support of many local businesses, organizations and individuals. These organizations have also supplied volunteers and services to help make the events special for all involved.
